a Tagalong Tour through
Nhanda Country
Traditionally, a ritual performed to welcome peoples of another tribe travelling through your country, the welcome ceremony informed the spirits of the visitor’s presence on country and asked for their safe passage while passing through. Today this ritual is called a Welcome to Country and is still an important cultural ceremony performed for visitors to the region and carries a strong and timely environmental message about caring for country.
Colleen is a major contributor to the artworks and cultural stories permanently on display at the Kalbarri Skywalk. Experience a cultural interpretation and walk through the Message Sticks Forest with artwork depicting bushfood trails, storylines and the importance of caring for country. Hear these message stick stories retold first hand by one of the artist who created them.
Visit some of Colleen’s favourite bushfood foraging spots and sample seasonal bushfoods. Learn about bushfoods, medicince plants and the traditional uses of local flora. Hear stories about growing up on country and learn about the social history of the region from an Aboriginal perspective.
Visit historic Murchison House Station and the location where the Aboriginal station workers and their families once camped. Enjoy campfire yarns and hear stories of station life while Colleen prepares a traditional campfire damper served freshly baked with Colleen’s home made quandong jam.
